CompsAPI vs CompSniper: comparison claims checked (2026)

The short answer

Two of the four things CompsAPI's comparison page says about CompSniper are out of date. Its page, eBay Sold Data APIs Compared, October 2026, lists CompSniper at 90 days of history and a Best Offer "flag only". CompSniper has had up to 3 years of history on every plan, free included, and returns the real accepted Best Offer price.

The price rows are right: CompsAPI is cheaper per request. What the page does not measure is accuracy. On the same 100 searches, 28.8% of CompsAPI's rows were the wrong item, against 6.3% for CompSniper.

History: 3 years, not 90 days

CompSniper's regular sold search returns the most recent sales, about the last 90 days, with full listing details. A separate endpoint, /v1/research/sold, goes back up to 3 years on all 8 eBay sites with the same key, on every plan including free (docs). CompsAPI offers up to 1,095 days on its Growth plan and above, and 1 year on its Free and Starter plans. So on the free plan, CompSniper goes back further.

Best Offer: the accepted price, not a flag

eBay shows the asking price on a sale that closed on an accepted offer. With bestOfferPrice=true, CompSniper returns the price the seller accepted where it is available, at no extra cost (docs). CompsAPI also returns accepted prices, so on this point the two are level.

Price: CompsAPI is cheaper per request

This part of their page holds up. CompsAPI sells 5,000 requests for $9, 25,000 for $29 and 100,000 for $79; CompSniper sells 2,000 for $9, 10,000 for $29 and 50,000 for $79. At the top listed plans CompsAPI works out to $0.50 per 1,000 requests and CompSniper to $1.10. If you run millions of requests a month and can live with more cleanup, that gap is real.

What neither page measures

Both vendors compare history, Best Offer and price. Neither publishes how many of the returned rows are the item you searched for, which is what decides whether a median is usable. We ran the same 100 searches through both on October 20, 2026:

MeasuredCompSniperCompsAPI
Wrong items, all searches6.3%28.8%
Wrong items, trading cards4.6%18.0%
Wrong items, electronics12.7%48.3%
Wrong items, fashion2.5%32.5%
Wrong items, collectibles6.6%34.7%
Real sales found58.8%52.9%
Median off, typical search5.0%14.6%

Lower is better for wrong items and median off; higher is better for real sales found. Per-search results are in the published data (CSV). Nearly half of CompsAPI's electronics rows were a different model, an accessory or a part, which is why its median landed almost three times further from the true price.

Which one to choose

  • Pricing apps, comps and valuations: CompSniper. Fewer wrong items means a median you can use without cleaning it yourself.
  • History on a free or low plan: CompSniper, 3 years on every plan against 1 year on CompsAPI's Free and Starter.
  • Several eBay countries in their own currencies: CompSniper covers 8 eBay sites, each in its local currency; CompsAPI is US first.
  • Lowest cost per request at very high volume: CompsAPI, if you clean the results yourself.

How we checked

CompsAPI's claims are quoted from its comparison page as published in October 2026. CompSniper's and CompsAPI's features and prices come from their public docs and pricing pages, checked October 19 to 21, 2026. Accuracy comes from our blind test of October 20, 2026: 100 searches written in advance with a definition of the correct item, sent to five APIs on the same day with default settings, and 18,450 unique rows labeled without knowing which API returned them. Full method on the methodology page. If either page changes, we will update this one.
